Lago Santo - Holy Lake

Enchanting lake in Val di Cembra at 1,200m

The Lago Santo is located at an altitude of 1,200 m in the basin created by the ice erosion in the porphyry. Its name derives from a popular legend, called the legend of the Prato Conteso - Contended Meadows.

The very one where the lake now stands was a plot of land that was the subject of disputes between heirs. One of these wished that the land would turn into a lake so that the quarrel would cease. The water filled the large basin threatening the village. A group of inhabitants of Cembra, as a sign of supplication, threw the ring of the Madonna in it and the waters stopped.

It is an excellent starting point for hikes along the Dürerweg and the European Path E5. Furthermore, in the surroundings of the lake you can practice sport fishing and horse riding. The lake also offers stretches of meadows and natural beach for a fresh and regenerating bath. In winter, however, when the lake freezes, it is possible to practice skating and curling.
